Qualifications
Education:
Undergraduate degree in journalism or mass communication, post-graduate degree preferred or extensive experience in journalism, public relations and/or communications.
Experience:
Minimum of seven (7) years of related experience in communications, journalism, project management, public relations, at increasingly senior management levels. Experience to include public relations, media relations, issues management, external communications, institutional communications and experience leading teams with strong management and leadership skills. Demonstrated experience in a comparable public-sector institution operating within a unionized environment preferred.
Skills:
Demonstrated strategic planning skills. superior writing, researching, public relations, communications and presentation skills including the ability to write for and present to diverse audiences and media.
Proven analytical, decision-making, and organizational skills.
Excellent editing skills with the ability to streamline and standardize communications written by a variety of authors.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders, often with conflicting points-of-view.
Ability to work well under extreme pressures.
Must be able to work with confidence and poise with University's highest-ranking administrators, often in time of crisis and under deadline pressures inherent in working with news media,
Able to think strategically and quickly on-the-spot, delivering timely counsel and producing communications collateral quickly.
Capable of taking complex research and distilling it into clear language.
Able to work collaboratively and provide and receive constructive criticism well.
A team player who is creative and capable of strongly and respectfully representing his/her position with senior leadership and working through conflicting leadership opinions on positioning projects to a diplomatic resolution.
Strong ability to directly or indirectly manage large projects with both financial and human resources component.
Must be highly organized and able to deliver priorities, have sound knowledge of editorial and journalistic principles.
Negotiation and influencing skills and the ability to maintain discretion, diplomacy, confidentiality, and to exercise good judgement.
Additional Notes:
Work is performed in an office setting with extended periods of working on a computer and telephone.Responds to emergency situations where there is a lot of pressure to find a solution quickly.
Works extended hours due to strict deadlines and unpredictability of role (issues and crisis management) which can include evenings and weekends. Requirement to be on-call outside of regular work hours.
