Toyota (Toyota Canada Inc. and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc.) currently has an exciting opportunity for an experienced media relations professional to play a lead role in our External Affairs department. This is a permanent, full time opportunity and will report to the Manager, Corporate Communications. The selected candidate will lead proactive and reactive media relations and external communications to build and protect Toyota’s reputation in Canada.

What you’ll be doing:

Team Leadership

  • Provide leadership and guidance for Corporate Communications team to ensure timely, accurate deliverables

  • Enhance team professionalism by setting standards and implementing ‘best practice’ media relations processes

  • Be a role model in diplomacy and media relations excellence

Strategic Planning and Budget Management

  • Lead the development of strategic communications plans to support corporate priorities

  • Develop and modify departmental processes to align with corporate best practices

  • Plan and manage annual and project budgets for Corporate Communications activities

Media Relations

  • Build, develop and lead Toyota’s relationship with the media (business, trade, consumer, tech, local, etc.)

  • Develop and lead proactive and reactive media relations strategies (corporate, brand and manufacturing)

  • Identify opportunities and proactively pitch stories to appropriate media to maximize positive earned media

  • Working with an external supplier, lead media monitoring, analysis and reporting (identify issues, opportunities)

  • Lead Toyota’s appropriate and consistent response to media requests

  • Write and edit top quality materials for a variety of audiences (statements, media releases, speeches, op-eds, articles, fact sheets, key messages, Q&As, executive briefing documents, etc.)

  • Lead and provide direction for agencies and suppliers supporting media relations activities

Issues Management and Crisis Communications

  • Lead the development and execution of issues management and crisis communications strategies with Corporate Communications Manager

  • Lead the identification and management of potential social media issues (working closely with the Digital Team and related agencies)

  • Lead the communication of recalls, liaising with key departments and other Toyota divisions to develop

  • appropriate and consistent messaging

Spokesperson Training and Support

  • Coordinate the delivery of media training for key Toyota spokespeople (working with an external supplier)

  • Develop and get approval for spokesperson key messages and Q&As before any media interaction

  • Coordinate and lead all media interviews with Toyota spokespeople in Canada

    Media Event Planning and Execution

  • Lead the planning and execution of media events and campaigns

Internal Stakeholder Relations

  • Chair cross-functional meetings to ensure consistent and best practice communications throughout the company

  • Work closely with Marketing and other key departments to ensure all Toyota communications are aligned

Community Investment and CSR Communications

  • Working with the Corporate Communications Manager and Corporate Communications Consultant, support the development, execution and communication of Toyota’s Canadian community investment activities
  • Support the development of Toyota and TCF relationships with community organizations, if required
  • Support the development and execution of Toyota and TCF community investment partnerships, if required

Qualifications

What you bring:

  • University degree, preferably in Journalism, Public Relations or Communications

  • 5-7 years of communications experience, ideally in a corporate and/or newsroom environment

  • Excellent writing skills with an ability to simplify concepts and tailor messaging for specific audiences

  • Strong research, fact-checking, editing, and proofreading skills and experience

  • Able to produce top quality content while managing multiple projects in stressful situations /under tight deadlines

  • Strong journalistic instinct with the ability to see news before it happens

  • A knack for telling a good story… and getting people to listen!

  • Deadline driven with an intimate understanding of the responsibilities, timelines and requirements of journalists

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to respond quickly to rapidly changing external and internal priorities

  • A strong sense of ownership and personal responsibility for the protection of corporate and brand reputation

  • A high degree of professionalism, tact and diplomacy

  • Extremely strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively at all levels

  • Strong leadership and coaching skills and, ideally, team leadership experience

  • An understanding of the unpredictable nature of corporate communications, and the ability to work occasional nights, weekends and holidays, if required

  • The ability to travel occasionally (mainly within Canada), if required

  • French language skills are an asset
