The Marketing and Communications department at Bow Valley College is expanding. Areas of responsibility will include:

Leadership 

  • Provides leadership, direction and supervision of the Communications team – including media and issues management, social media, internal communications, website, intranet and publications.
  • Oversees the Communications team’s functions directly, including develop job descriptions, recruit and hire staff, performance management, professional development and succession planning.
  • Regularly evaluates resource requirements for the team and allocate /re-assign staff to key priority areas/projects as needed.
  • Establishes key objectives for staff - ensuring these objectives are achieved as outlined to a high quality standard and are in compliance with college/ team’s policies and procedures. 
  • Ensures all team members understand their roles in specific projects/activities and how these activities align with the strategic direction of the team, department, and College.
  • Develops, maintains and instills staff concepts and strategies for good customer service.  
  • Responsible for overall management, evaluation, scheduling, discipline and corrective actions, performance management and motivation of staff to ensure optimal service is maintained.
  • Performance appraisals on direct reports
  • Writes and reviews job descriptions, recruitment action forms
  • Reviews postings and interview scripts 
  • Shortlists candidates, participates in interview panels 
  • Evaluates candidates and make final decision on candidate to be hired 
  • Considers and approves vacation requests and other leaves, professional development and overtime needs with consideration to budget parameters
  • Maintenance of Agresso absence reports, vacation and  other absence approvals
  • Take corrective action on performance issues as required.
  • Reviews work, as necessary, prior to distribution to stakeholders. 
  • Provides leadership to the area to ensure processes are effective and followed in the most diligent and efficient manner.
  • Ensures that the functional areas work collaboratively within the marketing and communications team, to ensure daily activities and requirements are met in a timely way.
  • Identifies areas of opportunity within the marketing and communications portfolio to proactively advise the Director on issues that could affect the College overall 
  • Responsible for assigning staff/ coverage for various stories / platforms. 
  • Manages projects to ensure content is accurate and submitted by deadlines
  • Provides leadership, as appropriate, for the Executive team in the absence of the Director, Marketing and Communications. 
  • Coordinates budgetary and statistical reports regarding services within the department.
  • Supports the Director, Marketing and Communications in addressing special requirements and initiatives. 

    Communications Operations

  • Understands the impact to employees and leadership during times of organizational change and provide consultation to mitigate the impacts.
  • Develops Communications strategies within related budgets.
  • Coordinates business planning and budget development for the unit, including business case development.
  • Accountable for determining, developing and monitoring budget activities within the unit.
  • Creates and manages release schedules for recurring publications, routine communications and special projects.
  • Utilizes information in surveys (ie Employee engagement survey, brand research survey) to guide communications style and information flow.
  • Analyzes the effectiveness of programs, offer recommendations and support to users.
  • Actively participant on the Crisis Communications team, and responsible for updating and training regularly.
  • Interprets and applies the Collective Agreements College Policies and Procedures as they relate to College operational functions.
Writes and edits copy for various audiences over a number of platforms (print, web, ads, TV, radio, publications, scripts).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree - Communications, Public Relations. 
  • 10 years in generalist capacity.
  • 8 years leading people with 8 years in managing Marketing and Communications and Public Relations.
  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.
  • Police Information Check required.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Previous experience within the post-secondary and/or unionized work environments.
  • Member of IABC preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to lead a team to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability of successful content marketing, and use of digital platforms.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop relationships and resolve complex issues.
  • Ability to build relationships across the College.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Tact and diplomacy.
  • Leadership experience. 
  • Great team member and collaborator: be self-accountable, reliable and help out with whenever and with whatever may be needed.
  • Experience in journalism, not required but considered an asset.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (both verbal and written) across multiple platforms for various audiences.
  • Strong copywriting, corporate communications and editing skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to lead a team to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability of successful content marketing, and use of digital platforms.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop relationships and resolve complex issues.
  • Proven ability to supervise and provide leadership to staff. 
  • Possesses superior leadership, people management and coaching/mentoring skills. 
  • Proven capacity to manage change
  • Ability to develop internal and external partnerships. 
  • Working knowledge of computer applications (specifically, MS Office and EXCEL)
