Job Summary
Responsible for providing leadership and expert communications and marketing advice and consultation with the Chief Executive Officer, senior Library management, and the Library Board in the planning, development and implementation of communications strategies to support the OPL's role and responsibilities in the development of the Ottawa Public Library - Library and Archives Canada joint facility. The position will also be the lead for communications for fundraising initiatives for both operational and capital purposes, in order to solicit and secure financial contributions for the OPL.

Responsible for writing, editing and design of fundraising related communications products and materials for various stakeholders (including advertising, marketing and promotions); and participating in the selection of external agencies and managing related work assignments.

Education & Experience
  • Four (4) year University degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing/Advertising, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of six (6) years of directly related experience including two (2) years of direct supervisory experience
  • *Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.

Language, Certificates & Licenses
  • Day 1 Ready – immediate requirement for language proficiency: French oral, reading, writing required English oral, reading, writing required
  • Candidates must meet language requirement for position upon hire.

Knowledge
  • Expert knowledge in communications tactics and techniques, planning, graphic design, media concepts, advertising and marketing principles and practices and all related production activities
  • Effective media relations
  • Effective communications tactics and techniques
  • Graphic design principles and practices.
  • Project management techniques, methodologies, and practices
  • Trends in communications industry and approaches
  • OPL governance, initiatives, programs and services
  • Relevant legislation, corporate standards and department policies and procedures
  • Local current events and trends
  • Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and evaluate its performance
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.
Competencies & Skills
  • Ability to predict how an issue will be perceived in the public domain, in order to prepare accordingly
  • Well developed strategic communications skills: proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Well developed interpersonal skills: proven ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization; exceptional verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to deal effectively with senior management, elected official and the public
  • Ability to work effectively within tight deadlines
  • Ability to think clearly and adapt to change during high pressure and/or stressful situations
  • Excellent research skills both on the internet and via traditional methods
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to advise/direct other team members
  • Ability to work as a motivating group leader or as a highly motivated team member

Qualifications
