The Role 

Ensuring what we say is always lining up with who we are and what we do is critical to our reputation, which is why this position is so important. 

In this role, you’ll develop a firm grasp on the complex issues facing our company. By engaging collaboratively with internal and external subject matter experts, you will gain a deep understanding of our business and stakeholder concerns and bring what matters most to the forefront. You will develop dynamic communications materials that not only focus on addressing stakeholder priorities, but also serve to differentiate our company and build our brand. As a result, demonstrated writing and planning skills as well as a keen attention to detail are required.

This position reports to the Team Lead, External Communications & Reputation Management.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Develop thoughtful communications plans to build our brand and address stakeholder interests and concerns
  • Enhance our ability to participate in media events and interviews by expanding our range of backgrounders, key messages and presentations
  • Review and revise technical presentations to be delivered externally to ensure content reflects key messages and format follows visual identity guidelines
  • Research, recommend and support sponsorship opportunities including drafting related event briefings and speaking notes
  • Monitor media coverage and public perception of the company and industry
  • Manage media lists and publication deadlines
  • Monitor effectiveness of communications, including formats and channels, and conduct best practice research on ways to more effectively reach targeted audiences
  • Collaborate with the broader External Affairs & Communications team to ensure cross-functional understanding of organizational challenges, and to align messaging internally and externally
  • Understand key issues facing the oil and gas industry as well as stakeholder interests and concerns
  • Ensure content is current and accurate across all communications tools
  • Develop project management tools including lessons learned documentation and manage logistics for events and projects
  • Participate on internal and external committees as required
  • Assist with crisis communications activities and other tools and projects as required


Required Education, Experience and Skills

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Media Relations or Journalism
  • 5+ years of related experience
  • Prior experience working in the energy industry and/or within a large multinational organization is preferred
  • Exceptional writing skills and the ability to effectively package information for a variety of audiences
  • Knowledge of current and emerging communications concepts, practices and tools
  • Continuously explores opportunities to innovate and streamline established work processes
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with competing priorities, and respond quickly to time-sensitive issues
  • Demonstrated complex problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Periodic travel may be required
