The Communications and Engagement Department is seeking an experienced Communications Advisor to support Edmonton Fire Rescue Services. You will provide strategic advice, implement public education programs and manage media on site during emergency situations.
 Fire Rescue Services protects life, property and the environment in Edmonton. As a trusted advisor, the successful applicant will have a proven ability to build strong relationships with clients and will have extensive experience in media relations and issues management.

The position is part of the communications team serving the Citizen Services department.

In the City of Edmonton’s fast-paced environment and with a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments of Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Lead the development, implementation, planning and management of short and long term communications strategies to support fire safety education and other initiatives

  • Proactively and reactively manage media relations and potential issues to support the sharing of timely and accurate information, including planning and managing media events, developing strategies and messaging, training and coaching spokespeople and serving as a spokesperson

  • Provide on-scene communications support during emergency situations. Duties include providing information about the situation to on-site and off-site media, drafting key messages and other communications materials from the scene, preparing spokespeople, conducting follow-up with media

  • Serve as trusted advisor to Edmonton Fire Rescue’s leadership on communications needs in support of their objectives

  • Trains and co-ordinates a team of staff who provide after hours emergency media support to EFRS

  • Produce communication materials aligned to the City’s culture and corporate brand. Write, edit and publish content for various channels, including print, web and video

  • Collaborate and coordinate with marketing and creative service colleagues in creating effective communication and  advertising products that are delivered on time and within budget

  • Leverage social media to advance EFRS and City of Edmonton objectives


  • Post secondary Degree in Communications, Public Relations or related discipline supplemented with 2 years progressively responsible experience in a designated marketing, public relations, public affairs or public information position 
  • Post secondary Diploma  in a Communications, Public Relations or related discipline, supplemented by 4 years experience progressively responsible experience in a designated marketing, public relations, public affairs or public information position
  • Demonstrated media relations, coaching spokespersons and project management experience 
  • Superior issues identification and management skills 
  • Proven client consulting and relationship building skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Experience successfully developing, implementing and evaluating communication plans
  • Knowledge of the requirements of mass communication media and specialized publications along with experience in fields such as advertising, printing, graphics, social media and other web-based communications
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Google Applications and social media
  • Experience working in an essential services environment would be an asset.
  • Accreditation in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) would be an asset 
  • The successful candidate must be able to participate in an on call rotation cycle and respond to emergency situations, occurring at any hour, city-wide
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent).  Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
  • Applicants may be tested

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Unpredictable hours of work will be required, as this role supports Edmonton Fire Rescue Services in responding to emergency situations, occurring at any hour, city wide.

Salary: $43.384 - $54.671 (Hourly); $76,431.760 - $96,316.630 (Annually)
