Topic:
Ten years ago, the Town of Walkerton, Ontario was rocked with tragedy from contaminated drinking water which killed seven people, left more than 2,300 residents severely ill and shook public confidence in tap water across Ontario. The Drinking Water Programs Branch of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment was tasked with developing ideas and products to educate children and youth and restore public confidence in Ontario's tap water.

Why the Ontario Ministry of the Environment targeted youth to restore public confidence:

  • 30% of Ontario's population are between the ages of 5-14;
  • Research conducted by Earth Rangers, a Canadian environmental educational organization, confirmed that children like to relate to cartoon characters;
  • The same research indicated that the most receptive group to environmental messages were 8-12 year olds, who could still be influenced by their parents and teachers, but were also old enough to grasp more technical concepts.

Walmart Canada engaged Reputations to launch ShareGreen.ca, a project meant to maintain positive momentum that Walmart Canada received during its Walmart Green Business Summit in Vancouver, B.C. The hope was to have nationally-recognized brands submit their green business case studies, and have ShareGreen.ca recognized as a strong resource on green business initiatives.

ShareGreen.ca

ATCO Gas and ATCO Electric (AG/AE) developed an "edu-tainment" program meant to educate young children about the hazards of electricity and natural gas in the home. After the results from a survey with Albertan teachers indicated that previous AG/AE teaching materials were not used in the classroom, AG/AE embarked on creating an educational program that would engage elementary students and faculty.

Discover how ATCO Gas and ATCO Electric dealt with these issues:

  • 42%-50% of ATCO customers indicated that AG/AE could do more to educate the public on safety;
  • Previous safety education material offered to elementary schools were either non-existent (e.g. ATCO Gas) or suffering from a lack of interest;
  • Teachers communicated a preference for in-class presentations by ATCO field personnel, but increasing workloads and staff shortages made it difficult for ATCO to deliver these types of presentations.

TO MAKE ITS SAFETY EDUCATION PROGRAM A SUCCESS!
